The relationship between Bonny Doon Vineyard and The Print Gallery began in a flurry of flying saucers (on t-shirts of course), when Randall Grahm launched his Le Cigare Volant wine in the early 1980s. This respected wine, made from France's Rhone region grapes, has a label depicting a flying saucer beaming a red ray upon a French chateau and the adjacent vineyard. As the story goes, in the 1950s, local wine grape growers in Châteauneuf-de-Pape, France got an ordinance passed forbidding spaceships from landing in their vineyards, an event worthy of a label of recognition. Le Cigare Volant translated means 'the flying cigar,' the French term for flying saucer, hence the look of the now familiar hovering contraption we see on the bottle.
Each wine label in turn tells the story of the particular wine and, with the accompanying illustration, are humorously clever and informative. As a forum for the telling of these worthy tales, our web page would exceed its boundaries. However, don't despair. A visit to their local tasting room at 10 Pine Flat Road in Bonny Doon, California (831-425-4518) may be just the ticket to satisfy your piqued curiosity.
Excerpted from the BDV and Cá del Solo's Mission Statement are the following 'salient and recurring winemaking themes:' "Having as much fun with the wine as relevant government agencies will allow" and "Producing wines and wine labels that will scintillate the sensibilities of the most jaded imbiber." To this we must add "producing t-shirts and 'Amen.'"
